Herbs have traditionally aided people in relaxing and getting to sleep. Not every single herb or formula works for everyone. The causes of sleep troubles are many and great, and it is best to work with an herbalist to find the formula that works for you.

When taking herbs, treat them differently than medicines. Try a little first, to see if it agrees with you. When you find a formula you like, continue to monitor changes in your body and mind. Discuss these changes or write them down if you can.

Herbal sleepmix tea Edit

Nutracontrol has been making Sleepmix Tea since the early 1970s, exclusively for use in conjunction with the NADA protocol (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association). One of the NADA founders, Dr. Michael O. Smith, and Nutracontrol's owner, Richard Roberts, perfected the blend.

Word spread about the tea's effectiveness, and people began to widen its use. Today, there are many people who order the tea regularly for a variety of personal uses, including the following:

Other plant remedies Edit

Herbal teas can help, as can bananas, melatonin, passion-fruit extract, and fish oil.

  • chamomile
  • passionflower
  • catnip
  • lemon balm
  • oat straw
  • hops
  • valerian

Valerian is an herbal sedative (but toxic at high doses - there is one reported case of overdose at 20 times the recommended dose). Potential side affects include nausea, dizziness, restlessness, blurry vision, and excitability. These symptoms can occur in people who are particularly susceptible to valerian's constituents or in overdose. These symptoms can be mitigated by combining passionflower with the valerian.

Homeopathic remedies also help.

Not alcohol Edit

Alcohol, especially 2 hours before bedtime, can disrupt deep sleep. It spikes blood sugar, then when blood sugar crashes later in the night, some experience insomnia.  Passing out is physiologically different from sleeping. Alcohol, when consumed before sleeping, can shorten or eliminate REM sleep, which may be involved in the healthy "metabolism" of traumatic experiences.
